Guidelines / Hidding Artist Aliases

Purpose

Clarity of the artist page. Therefore hiding duplicate or near-duplicate information.

What it does

  • Hidden for regular users.
  • Visible for editors, but displayed in italics.

Use

  • Clusters of aliases which only differ on minor cosmetical differences: and vs. &, the vs. His, etc... Of the cluster, pick the most used alias as the one that remains visible for regular users.

Example: Louis Armstrong Cluster: Louis Armstrong and The All Stars, Louis Armstrong and The All Stars, Louis Armstrong and The All-Stars, Louis Armstrong & His All Stars, Louis Armstrong and His All Stars, Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars, Louis Armstrong und seine All-Stars. Displaying just one of them is sufficient for our regular users, in this case the most used "Louis Armstrong and The All Stars".

  • Artist alias which are identical to the real name of the artist.

Example: Björk . Artist alias "Björk Guðmundsdóttir" is identical to real name "Björk Guðmundsdóttir", therefore set as hidden.

  • Hiding aliases created for Virtual duets

    Example: Dua Lipa

Caution

Be aware that hiding an alias means hiding it from Google as well, removing the artist page from search results. Therefore, use it conservatively.
