Thanks for checking this for me. I've looked at a few more sources and they seem to be converging on 1970, for example the Standard Catalogue of American Records. LP discography suggests January 1970, which would fit (just about...) with your careful analysis of other Columbia releases around that time. I'll go with that for now and explain the sources in editor comments.
So on this occasion, it looks like discogs has beaten rateyourmusic
