Vs. (How To Handle)

Is there a guideline when the performance artist credit(s) uses "vs." or something effectively identical? For my notes I treat VV vs. JC as two separate artists, i.e. a co-credit. I also think it is how this situation is usually treated on site, but that could be the result of bias.

What triggered this post: Amendola vs. Blades

Seems to me a co-performer credit for:

Scott Amendola

Scott Amendola Band

Scott Amendola Band is a 7-piece band, Amendola vs. Blades is a duo. What is your question exactly?

a) We sometimes treat VV Band and VV as the same artist. Even if not aliases in this case, I provided the internal link to show that at least a related artist was already on site;

b) "And", "&", etc. suggest a possible duo (i.e. a separate entity different from the parts). "Vs." does not, suggesting two separate artists co-credited for a recording; and

c) If Amendola vs. Blades is correctly setup as a duo, then this is inconsistent with how similar situations has been handled on site. Just editor preference? In this case, looks to me that Amendola vs. Blades is a one off pairing of two different artists for a tribute album.

My question is straightforward as presented in my original post:

Came across Louis Castel, Edmond Casti prepping for a submission. Why are these two setup as separate artists when there's a much stronger case for a duo than my originally referenced situation above?

Not exactly reasonable assumptions. Castel Et Casti has it's own Discogs page, with the members' entries limited to writing credits. The duo seems to have 4 total releases, with three performances on site:

Amendola Vs. Blades does have two releases and one appearance in Discogs, but the entries under each separately appear equal to or exceed that.

Most importantly is the contrary meanings of "and" and "versus". "And" suggests together/in union while "versus" suggests in conflict or opposites. Hall & Oates as opposed to Tyson vs. Foreman. Loggins & Messina as opposed to Brexit vs. the EU.

My only conclusion is that there is no applicable guideline for consistency, leaving the matter for editor preference. I believe that this is the first time I have ever seen a vs. treated as a single artist on site....
