- The publication date above refers to the book 'Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards', a collection of harp airs by Edward Jones. The song is known to have existed at least forty years earlier from a 1740s manuscript by John Thomas associated with an anterliwt (a travelling musical play) called Ffrewyll y Methodistiaid (Whipping the Methodists), in which the air is written in abbreviated violin notation. Since many anterliwt lyrics were set to familiar tunes, it is likely that the melody is older still.
