- This ballad is based on a historical incident. Due to depletion of the whale fisheries, by the 1820s, whalers were voyaging in more treacherous waters in search of prey. In 1830, a fleet of some 50 whalers headed to the Davis Straits in Greenland to hunt. Almost 20 ships were smashed and splintered by ice floes in Melville Bay during this expedition, including The Diamond. This song is collected in the Roud Folksong Index as number 2172.
