- The origins of the melody are unknown. The first lyrics stated were created by unrevealed writer(s?) to support Social Democrat August Bebel's election campaign in 1907. In WW I, German soldiers marched to a version mainly replacing the last two lines of the verses. The lyrics were partly 'adjusted' again after the assassination of the Socialist couple Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht and constitute the version commonly known today. Also, in the 1930s, SA leader Adolf Wagner changed some wordings to fit Nazi purposes.
