"High Society" is a based on a melody originally played by New Orleans street bands. It was adapted by Porter Steele from "Picou's Clarinet Chorus" and has since become a traditional jazz standard. In the 1920s Walter Melrose added lyrics to it (which are never performed) and re-published it like he did to several other jazz compositions too in order to claim a larger share of the royalties.
