An old English carol, known as far back as 1400. There are numerous versions with different melodies and lyrics, derived from a merging of several folk songs. Most versions tell the story of the Virgin Mary desiring cherries to eat, her husband Joseph refusing to retrieve them for her, and her unborn child Jesus commanding the tree to give her the fruit.
"Sant Joseph was an old man, And an old man was he ; He married sweet Mary, And a Virgin was she.
"And as they were walking In the garden so green, She spied some ripe cherries Hanging over you treen.
