Uncertain authorship and dating of this song that has been in the public domain. It deals with a little girl wanting her mommy to come home and her abusive alcoholic father who ends up killing her.
Appears the first recording was by Clyde Moody in December 1947. His release didn't credit an author (but his flip-side did), so presumed to be a traditional. Several of the subsequent cover performances have been registered in the respective singer's names (including Hank Thompson and Dolly Parton) since this was a public domain song, but their versions have the identical lyrics. William York registered Hylo Brown's 1962 version, but he also registered every single traditional song on Brown's album. - Licensing
