I'm on My Way (to Canaan Land) written by [Traditional]

The Carter Family recorded their version of the traditional Caanan's Land family of songs in 1939 (which is now considered the standard "Bluegrass version"). Their version slowed the tempo and removed the African-American gospel aspect of it and revised the traditional lyrics. A.P. Carter registered the song as his own, but it heavily borrowed from the traditional spiritual and arguably isn't a true adapation (but it varies so significantly from say Mahalia Jackson's "I'm on My Way" it's difficult not to separate them in some fashion).

I'm on my way to Canaan's land
I'm on my way to Canaan's land
I'm on my way to Canaan's land
I'm on my way (praise God!) I'm on my way.

If father won't go, it won't hinder me
If father won't go, it won't hinder me
If father won't go, it won't hinder me
I'm on my way (praise God)! I'm on my way.

If mother won't go, it won't hinder me
If mother won't go, it won't hinder me
If mother won't go, it won't hinder me
I'm on my way (praise God!) I'm on my way.

If sister won't go, it won't hinder me
If sister won't go, it won't hinder me
If sister won't go, it won't hinder me
I'm on my way (praise God!) I'm on my way.

Oh, be baptized in Jesus's name
Oh, be baptized in Jesus's name
Oh, be baptized in Jesus's name
I'm on my way (praise God!) I'm on my way.

I'm on my way to Canaan's land
I'm on my way to Canaan's land
I'm on my way to Canaan's land
I'm on my way (praise God) I'm on my way
