- The earliest documented performance of this song was by David Jones in his role of Blueskin in the burlesque melodrama, Little Jack Sheppard, which opened at the Gaiety Theatre in London on December 26, 1885. However, the song is much older and was described as a "quaint old ditty" in a review of this performance in a London newspaper. The lyrics show some similarity to "Farewell to Judges and Juries," a song performed in 1820 and the melody related to the folk song "Mush, Mush."
