- First performed at the annual gathering of newspaper salesmen in Lille (France) in 1864. It worldwide developped into a common and international anthem of democratic socialists, communist, and also European civil rights movements. As of 1972, the publishing company Montana Edition, acqiured the rights in the song. Subsequntly, the GDR ("East Germany") and other Socialists and Communist countriesy paid Montana annual flat fees of 20,000 DM each for the use of the authoring rights of the song in their territories. Pierre de Geyter passing away in 1932, the international copyrights expired in 2002.
