Traditional, most likely of black origin. First annotation of the song as "Honey, Take A One On Me" in Howard Odum's 1911 'Folk-song and Folk-poetry as found in the Secular Songs of the Southern Negroes: Part 1':
A variation of the well-known little song, "Honey, take a One on Me," it has a great number of verses that have become popular, and are undoubtedly negro verses. Most of these, however, are not suitable for publication. An idea may be given of the song.
