Comments: Self-taught musician, songwriter, lyricist , performer, music publisher and teacher from Philadelphia. Winner wrote over 200 instructional books for some two dozen instruments and some 3,500 song arrangements.

Although Winner published songs under his own name, he also published them under a variety of pseudonyms, the most popular of which were ballads appearing under the name "Alice Hawthorne". (Hawthorne was his mother's maiden name.) These works came to be known generically as "Hawthorne Ballads".

During the American Civil War he wrote a song entitled "Give Us Back Our Old Commander: Little Mac, the People's Pride", about General George McClellan, who President Abraham Lincoln had discharged as the Union General of the Army of the Potomac. The first Amendment to the U.S. Constitution notwithstanding, this resulted in the arrest and jailing of Winner for a brief period of time on a charge of treason. Winner was ultimately freed on the condition that all remaining copies of the sheet music for the song be destroyed.

Winner was one of the original inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
