- A cabaret singer in her youth, Bruce retired from the music business when she married Dr. Arthur C. Logan, a surgeon and personal physician to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Thereafter, Bruce assumed her husband's last name and worked as a civil rights advocate. At one time, Bruce was the only norther board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Council. She served as the head of New York City's Commission on Human Rights between 1977 and 1979, in which capacity she fought against redlining.
