- Usually incorrectly known as the Can-Can, this piece is part of the operetta "Orphée aux enfers" ("Orpheus in the Underworld"), first performed at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens, Paris. It is sung by the characters Pluton (tenor, played by Leoncé in the first performance), Jupiter (baritone, Desiré), Vénus (contralto, Marie Garnier) and Eurydice (soprano, Lise Tautin). The Can-Can is a dance derived from the quadrille or galop. It first appeared in Parisian music halls in the 1830's, possibly arriving from Algeria.
