- Often referred to as a Jazz opera, the compositions (all by Bley) circle around poems by Canadian poet/Jazz lyricist Paul Haines - though not all include vocals. A multitude of musicians and vocalists participated in the recordings, which stretched over nearly three years, a. o. Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, Paul Motian, Gato Barbieri, Linda Ronstadt(!) and Michael Mantler, Although de facto recorded with The Jazz Composer's Orchestra, this is the only release on the JCOA Records label not officially released by or with that collective.
