The Austrian composer Bruno Granichstaedten (1879-1944) has written 16 operettas and music for various films. His most famous work is the 1925 operette "Der Orlow", which was turned into a movie in 1927. This operette had a very succesful run in Paris in 1926 as "L'Orlof" starring baritone André Baugé.
This singer released a single from this stage version called Minuit, Place Pigalle. The title was derived from a book famous at the time in France and bears no relation to the title of the original work. And that is part of my problem!
I have listened to a number of works from the original "Der Orlow" as sung by the likes of Richard Tauber, but have not been able to trace the original work.
Anyone out there, who knows more about rather obscure operettes...............
