English folksong collected as Roud #277. It was used by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the first movement of his composition "English Folk Song Suite" and was also arranged in a choral version by Percy Grainger in 1912.
In its original lyrical form, a song of seduction, going back to the 17th century, resulting in numerous variations as editors altered the lyrics so as not to shock the delicate sensibilities of English ladies and gentlemen. The first known published set of lyrics for the song appeared between 1838 and 1845.
The song is also known under other names such as "As I Roved Out", "The Soldier and the Maid", "One May Morning" and "One Sunday Morning". - Licensing
