It is a song of unknown origin but very popular throughout the Hispanic world. It is a lullaby popularized by singers Atahualpa Yupanki, Mercedes Sosa and Victor Jara, among others. It tells us about mother who works in the fields, sick and exploited, who provides food for her son.
The one who sings this song to the black child is his nanny, surely a woman of color and a neighbor who takes care of the child while
mother goes to the coffee plantation to work.
There is a recording where Yupanki himself says: These chords belong to an old traditional song that I found many years ago in the Caribbean area on the border of Venezuela and Colombia. It was sung by a colored woman. I learned it, loved it, and walked the world with it. - Published by
