It has been speculated that the titular Pippo (who "doesn't know that / when he passes by / the whole town laughs", "thinks he's handsome like Apollo" and "jumps around like a chicken") might have been Achille Starace, Secretary of the National Fascist Party, or even the dysneian Goofy (in Italian, Pippo). In 1962, Kramer revealed that Pippo was in fact Pippo Barzizza, with whom he had had an argument in 1939: when asked by Kramer "What does the audience want from me?", Barzizza bluntly replied: "Non lo so e non voglio saperlo!" ("I don't know and I don't want to know"). Ironically, the orchestra conductor in the first recording of the song was Pippo Barzizza.
