This song consists of a collection of "floating verses" reminiscent of General Taylor, Stormalong John and other shanties. It was made popular thanks to a recording by Pete Seeger in 1955 who thought it a fragment of an old English ballad or sea song that might have passed through West Indian musical idioms.
CHORUS:
Deep blue sea, Willie deep blue sea
Deep blue sea, Willie deep blue sea
Deep blue sea, Willie deep blue sea
It was Willie what got drowned
In th deep blue sea
VERSE 1
Dig his grave with a silver spade
Dig his grave with a silver spade
Dig his grave with a silver spade
It was Willie what got drowned
In th deep blue sea
VERSE 2
Let him down with a long gold chain
Let him down with a long gold chain
Let him down with a long gold chain
It was Willie what got drowned
In th deep blue sea
VERSE 3
Wrapped him up in a winding sheet
Wrapped him up in a winding sheet
Wrapped him up in a winding sheet
It was Willie what got drowned
In th deep blue sea - Licensing
