[Roud 73; Child 155; Ballad Index C155; Mudcat 26213, 40854; trad.] British traditional with roots dating many centuries. The Annals of Waverly for the year 1255 give the whole story - Hugh, of Lincoln, age nine, is enticed into a Jew's garden, after which he's tortured and crucified to mock Christians. The American version, "Fatal Flower Garden" typically removes any references to the Jewish/Christian connection.
Cecil Sharp collected "Sir Hugh" from Dol Small of Nellysford, Nelson County, VA, on 22 May 1918. Nelstone's Hawaiians from Atlanta, GA, sang "Fatal Flower Garden" in a 30 November 1929 recording.
[Verse One - Fatal Flower Garden]
It rained, it poured, it rained so hard,
It rained so hard all day,
That all the boys in our school
Came out to toss and play. - Licensing
