A song known under many different titles describing day to day life in a 19th Century North American lumber camp, with details given of the employer, the workforce, meals, smoking in the evening and sleep. There are many variants arising from the local details added as the song has been passed on.
One source states that the song "originated about 1847 near Muskegon, Michigan" but others have noted that no evidence is cited for this assertion. The origin has also been placed possibly as New Brunswick or Maine.
Several sources indicate that the tune is of Scottish origin under the title "Musselburgh Fair" but, while the Scottish origin is plausible, evidence of a tune by that name has not yet been found.
The publication date above is the earliest known, a songster: Delaney's Song Book #13. - Licensing
