- Bliss and his wife were killed in the Ashtabula River Railroad Disaster on December 29, 1876. His words were recovered from his belongings in the wreckage. McGranahan set them to music in 1877 and the hymn was published in "Welcome Tidings, a New Collection for Sunday School", compiled by Robert S. Lowry, William H. Doane, and Ira D. Sankey.
